November 27 – Day 3 – Cost of Intimate Partner Violence

November 27 – Day 3 – Cost of Intimate Partner Violence

Apart from the physical, mental, and emotional impacts that intimate partner
violence has on individual victims, there are also financial and economic
impacts on society. Women and girls who have been subject to intimate partner
violence seek medical help – including for both physical and mental health
problems – as well as legal assistance and financial support while trying to get
out of abusive or dangerous situations.  The economic cost of intimate partner
violence in Canada has been estimated at close to $5 billion per year.
What
you can do: Volunteer with or donate to organizations which provide assistance
to victims of intimate partner violence. Local examples in Wellington County
include Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis (www.gwwomenincrisis.org) and the
Guelph General Hospital’s Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Centre (gghorg.ca).
