December 4 – Day 9 – GamerGate Controversy

This controversy started when game developer Zoe Quinn’s ex-boyfriend claimed that Zoe had an affair with journalists/judges discussing video games, implying that she had influenced critiques of her video game. Couched in allegations of ‘ethics in journalism’,
the uproar from gamers centered largely on harassment, threats of violence, and
publishing of personal information about women in the games industry, including
Zoe, Anita Sarkeesian (a feminist media critic), and another developer Brianna
Wu. The vast majority of comments directed toward the women were sexist and
misogynistic, which highlighted the extensive underlying sexism and misogyny in
gaming culture. The threats against Anita Sarkeesian, which included information
as to whether she lived, became so vicious that she was forced to leave her home
and seek protection from authorities. When she was scheduled to speak at Utah
State University, both she and the school received terrorist threats citing the
École Polytechnique massacre as inspiration.
What you can do: If you have children, friends, or loved ones who are gamers, discuss the issue with them. Talk to your children, your friends, and your family about the ways in which women are discussed and portrayed in gamer culture, and in larger society, and
encourage them to not be silent if they encounter negative comments directed towards women.
