December 7 – Day 13 – Female Genital Mutilation and its’ Presence in Canada

The United Nations World Health Organization estimates that 140 million women and girls around the world have experienced female genital mutilation (FGM). Although the practice is concentrated in 28 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, it is an issue for women and girls from those regions who have immigrated to Canada, and for their health care providers. Immigrant families from those regions often send their girls back to undergo the procedure, and when they return to Canada they may require medical assistance as the procedure is all too often done improperly and/or unsafely. Doctors face the difficult decision of whether to report, given the risk that the families may then not
seek medical assistance if that female child or another in the family has similar problems again.
