December 8 – Day 14 – Human Trafficking

It is estimated that at any given time, there are 2.5 million people performing various types of forced labour as a result of human trafficking. 43% of trafficking victims are used for sexual exploitation, and 98% of those are women and girls. Trafficking occurs in 161 countries around the world, including Canada – as both a source of and destination for victims. For more information about trafficking in Canada and what the Canadian government is doing to address the problem, visit http://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pblctns/ntnl-ctn-pln-cmbt/index-eng.aspx.
What you can do: If you have, or suspect that you have, information about trafficking, report it to the police. The UN has set up a trust fund for victims of trafficking, to which you can donate: https://www.unodc.org/unodc/human-trafficking-fund.html.
And Amnesty International frequently conducts awareness campaigns – for information about how to get involved visit http://www.amnesty.ca/category/issue/human-rights-abuses/trafficking.
